Note:

Patients who are severely immune compromised could get higher infection rate. These patients are normally monitored more often to attempt to detect infection early and treat it before any complications develop. The infection rate of these patients in other forms of dialysis especially hemodialysis is very high and more serious.

There is small percentage of patients around 5-10% who do not do well in peritoneal dialysis no matter what for unclear reasons. When patients are placed on peritoneal dialysis they are monitored closely to detect early signs of modality failure. Patients are transferred to other forms of dialysis immediately if they were found not doing well on peritoneal dialysis.

We believe that everyone deserves a chance to benefit from peritoneal dialysis but not everyone would succeed on it!

In a study published in Kidney International, the authors found that sudden death in hemodialysis is common mainly in Mondays in patients dialyzed Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It is also common in Tuesdays in patients dialyzed in Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. the authors attributed the increase of sudden death in hemodialysis patients to the intermittent nature of the treatment.
